One of the most important things we will ever do in life is learn how to follow God’s lead. It requires giving Him your attention and not being overly distracted by things of this world. If life and the things of this world are too loud and important to you, it will make it far more difficult to hear His voice and sense His direction.
The Basics
One of the best, most basic ways you can get started is to get to know God. Cultivate a personal relationship with Him. Read His Word, learn His Laws. Memorize the Ten Commandments.
The next step is of vital importance: as you learn Who God is, as you learn His Commands for His people, follow them. It’s as simple and complicated as that.
Some commands are easy to understand and get – such as Do Not Murder. Hopefully no extra effort is required on your part to obey that. But when we’re told Not to Bear False Witness, depending on the circumstances, one might struggle a bit more with that.
Let me encourage you here: if it matters to God, we would be wise to make it of the utmost importance to us. If our goal is to grow closer to God, then we must trust that He knows what He is doing and He made these guidelines for our good.
Get so familiar with God that you can spot things that aren’t in line with what He says. Despite what others may indicate, the end does not justify the means. God’s rules apply to God’s people. If you are claiming to be one of His, you are representing Him in ways you don’t even realize. Do your utmost to represent Him well and follow His commands!
The Foundation is Laid
As you learn more about God, studying His word and seeking to follow Him, look for Him in everyday moments and things. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. And be sure to ask Him to lead you.
Once you know the basics, the foundation has been laid. Now you should spend your life building on that foundation. Continually seek for a deeper understanding of Who God is and what He wants from you. You have a mission, a specific purpose to fulfill, and it is up to you to realize it and give your all!
But let me tell you, as you follow God’s lead, sometimes He asks hard things of us. This isn’t to punish us or to frustrate us, but rather to strengthen our commitment to serving Him. Determine today to follow where He leads.
Strengthening the Foundations
Whether you go to church or not, I encourage you to have a personal relationship with God. Learn Who He is directly from His word.
His word says not to commit murder. Many churches and Christians will say there are exceptions for when abortion is okay. Abortion is murder. God says not to murder. There’s no fluff, no exceptions, no other possible interpretations. You need to familiarize yourself with God so that you follow Him, not worldly views. Worldly views shift and change constantly, making exceptions and excuses. God never changes.
This is only one of many hard topics. The point I want to make is this: we as Christians must become so familiar with God that we can call out and strengthen fellow believers when wolves in sheep’s clothing come along. God knows all and sees us. Even and perhaps especially the situations that lead up to the temptation to have an “approved” worldly response. To respond to something awful by having a worldly response causes further problems, it doesn’t erase the first. Two wrongs never make a right.
But on the other hand, always remember this: you never do wrong by doing right. When we honor God, in all things, He will honor us. As if pleasing our heavenly Father wasn’t motivation enough, He says He will honor us! That is an amazing promise!
How to Follow God’s Lead
Learning to follow God’s lead is a lifelong pursuit. It requires surrender and constantly seeking Him. It will change your life in ways you can’t imagine. But you will see Him work in ways you can’t fathom! His abilities and plans are mind-boggling!
Pause and consider your relationship with God today. Ask for His direction, commit to knowing Him more deeply. Ponder your friends and relationships – are they God-honoring? Making life changes for God will be the best decision you or I ever make. God wants our heart and our attention. He wants to show us His incredible love.
Following God’s lead happens in the small, everyday decisions. And as we navigate those well it gives us courage and strength to follow His lead in the major things!
May God get a hold of you and inspire you as only He can!
Until Next Time!
Hope.
