Growing up, one of my favorite things was when we would get to go shopping. Now if things were really lining up, I’d also have a few dollars to spend.
I used to know down to the penny how much money was in my little wallet. And depending on where we were headed I would have sales tax figured in so that I knew just what ticket item I was able to consider.
Claire’s and craft stores were two of my favorite spots. I used to dream of buying one of the fancy hair crimpers (dreams of a girl with straight hair, haha!) at Claire’s. Alas, I always settled on earrings or a headband as I never had the money for the crimper. (And who are we kidding, the word “saving” wasn’t in my vocabulary!)
Online vs In Person Shopping
Flash forward to the early 2000s and online shopping was starting to gain momentum. I started selling books on online and learned a whole new dimension of shopping.
Though we would still go to town and shop from time to time, it wasn’t as often as we had in the past. Things were a bit tighter and one way to spend less is to shop less! I began to learn the art of window shopping – looking without the intent to buy. A completely different perspective then I had grown up with!
Somehow my sisters would find the most fascinating things while shopping, but my own items paled in comparison. Shopping didn’t hold the same charm to me as it had in the past.
Build Your Own Boutique
And then I discovered a shop on a downtown street that was just beautiful! I would have bought every item in it had I had the money and the space to put it. Furniture, decor, nic-nacs, signs, etc. Boutique items that were unique and lovely.
I did buy two pieces of furniture from this shop with my savings. I had been in search for a chest of drawers to use for my new clothing boutique. Actually, technically my father bought them for me. I told him what I had in savings and could afford. He made the deal with the shop owner and wouldn’t let me reimburse him once we got home. Such a generous gift and it makes me love these pieces all the more!
But back to that boutique – it sparked something in me! That was the kind of shop I get could excited about shopping in! It was tasteful and cozy. I told one of my sisters about it and we went back a little while later. Again, I was delighted with the products and style.
Fast forward a few years, that same shop owner started yet another shop and then sold it to my sister and I – and that’s how we ended up at Twig! And together we work to provide a unique, beautiful and inviting shopping experience to all who come in! I remember the delights of shopping as a young child and I want to bring a bit of that special thrill back!
