I confess I had my reservations when I first heard about The Chosen. I’m not overly enthralled with movies that seek to tell the story of Christ and His life – I’d rather just read about it in the Bible.
But my Dad was impressed with the series and thought we would like it, so I definitely wanted to give it a chance. The first episode or two was a little hard for me to follow. Learning the characters, discerning the storyline. But by the third episode I was hooked. The acting, the filming, the way they portrayed the parables – it is incredible!
Black and White
One review I read, which I think describes it very well, is that seeing The Chosen gives a new perspective and depth to the parables. Though we may know them by heart, sometimes they can lack a certain life and realness to them. But somehow, The Chosen gives you a bigger picture. It’s as if it brings the Bible from black and white to color.
And this description is so true! It’s curious, reading the parables and even the Bible as a whole, I hadn’t considered the details that surround the characters and storylines. But The Chosen gives you a glimpse of what may have led up to this parable or that situation. That’s not to say it is gospel truth, just an interesting dimension of realness it gives the Bible.
Bible characters were human just like we are today. They had struggles and faced hardships, but they also knew how to laugh!
The Chosen
Impressively, The Chosen is crowd-funded. You can watch it for free (I’ll post a link below) and can then donate to the project if you are inclined.
Season one is now complete and they are in the process of filming season two. I can’t wait to see it!
