In school, my parent’s always insisted that we learn careful and proper penmanship. Once we reached high school, they would transition us to Spencerian – an elaborate form of script. It took a lot of hard work and practice, but each of us graduated with lovely handwriting.
People often notice our cursive writing and comment on it. They admire it, but doubt their own ability to learn how to write beautifully themselves.
“You have the prettiest handwriting I’ve ever seen,” she said. “I could never write like that.” Ooh but you could, I wanted to tell her. If you really wanted to. And if she asked me how, this is what I would recommend!
3 Steps to Mastering Your Own Style of Writing
Today I want to share a creative (and free!) way to master your own unique style of handwriting! Perhaps you like flourishes or maybe you prefer classic lines, picking a font uniquely for yourself is a lot of fun!
Step #1
Head on over to an open source font website – I recommend www.fontsquirrel.com. I’ve been using them for years! Their fonts are free and they have a fantastic selection!
Try browsing through one of the available categories – perhaps script, retro, or casual. Don’t know what you’re looking for? Browse through current popular scripts to find one that looks like “you”!
Step #2
Once you have selected a font of your choice you will want to download and install it. If you haven’t ever installed a font, google it (be sure to include the name of your operating system – ie. “how to install a font on windows 10” or some such). It isn’t too tricky, you just have to know how!
Step #3
Once your font is installed correctly, open a word document. You can use Office, Libre Office, or Open Office, to name a few. Be sure to select the font that you have just downloaded and installed.
Write the alphabet in both capital and lower case letters across a blank document. I recommend putting a generous amount of space between each letter. You will print this sheet and use it for reference. Now when you write notes or somebody’s name, you can look just how to form each of the letters so that you can master your own unique script!
An interesting thing to note is that sometimes the lowercase ‘r’ appears differently depending what letters are next to it. Lowercase ‘p’ can be another letter that has different forms. If there are any particular words that you feel might be tricky to master with this new font, try spelling them out on your document and then duplicating them on your paper.
There! Mastering a unique font is quite straightforward, isn’t it?! Have fun with this idea! Maybe even invite a friend to try it with you! This is exactly what I did after I graduated to give myself my own unique style!
Until Next Time!
Hope.
