Running a Hobby Business
Have you ever considered running a hobby business?! It’s a delightful idea for almost any age! I love how it gives you something productive and enjoyable to do with your time. All the while, you are doing something you sincerely enjoy! Surely you have a hobby – some area that you really enjoy spending time and effort. Though there are an incredible number of details to running a business, it isn’t nearly as difficult as one might think! Here are a few ideas of where to begin!
First off, what kind of business are you considering? I recommend making it something you genuinely enjoy doing, be it web design, writing, designing jewelry, selling apparel, etc – make it something that will delight and inspire you! You might not always be able to make your hobby your main form of employment, but there is no reason why it cannot be your secondary form or hobby job!
Do you have basic, necessary supplies for running this business? Depending on which vocation you choose, determine what supplies you have and which you will need. Let’s assume that, since this is already your hobby, you have the basics for your business. Perhaps you love to paint portraits. Well, if this is your active hobby, then you should already have many painting supplies – canvas, paints, paintbrushes, trays, etc.
What are your resources? Next you will need to discover which resources you will require for getting your items available to the public – for example a camera and a computer to make items available for sale online. A printer so you can print shipping labels at home. Access to quality, affordable shipping supplies to ship your items. Etc.
Are you committed to your business? You must decide if you are really serious about this hobby business. It’s fine if you decide it’s not for you, just don’t do anything halfheartedly! If it doesn’t inspire and excite you, then don’t do it. On the other hand, if it thrills you no end, then you should do it! I think a hobby business is one of the best ways to get to enjoy a hobby in this busy life! And I also enjoy being productively occupied too!
A few other thoughts from my 10+ years of running a hobby businesses:
- Remember to always keep your correspondence friendly and professional. No need to share frustrations or let your customers know that you are annoyed!
- Packaging is important. Don’t be afraid to upgrade to a nicer quality packaging for your products. It typically doesn’t cost too much more if you shop carefully and it will pay off! (Besides won’t you feel fabulous and luxurious using that nicer packaging?! It helps keep you excited about what you do!)
- Always work to keep on top of your game – read up on new books, tools and products. This will help your business stay fresh and interesting!
- And one of the newest things I’ve learned: it’s okay to move on and to close a business down. Nothing is forever – including any of your businesses. Don’t be afraid to move on to the next thing!
Have you run a hobby business? What are some pointers you would share? Or maybe you are inspired to start a hobby business now? Do share!
Until Next Time!
Hope.
